Dean Porter Vs Chatteris’ England International Jordan GillFirst up for Colchester ABC was Eastern Counties Schools Champion Dean Porter. He faced a replacement opponent who stepped in on the day to save Dean missing the opportunity of boxing in front of home fans. This offered a big step up for Deano as the opponent was Chatteris’ England International Jordan Gill. This clash of Eastern Counties Champions was a short but explosive affair that had the crowd in full voice. Both boys started fast and were soon exchanging powerful shots to head and body. Gill the naturally bigger guy was taking the fight to the home boxer who tried to match fire with fire in each exchange. Despite landing with a good right to the body and a good left hook to the head, Dean was pushed back towards a neutral corner as the round was nearing its end. In a blistering attack Gill landed with a crunching hook to the body that sank the CABC boy to his knees. He beat the count but the referee signalled it was all over and stopped the contest. Full credit to Gill for taking the contest at such short notice and he truly looked a class act as he extended his record to 19 wins from 25 contests. Dean can bounce back from this and be better for the experience. There’s no disgrace losing to someone of this calibre whose losses have come in England and GB finals.

Jamie Cook with ex club member and current professional prospect Lee PurdyIt was a return to winning ways for the other Colchester Junior on the bill. Jamie Cook showed further improvement in his debut season as he delt with a strong opponent in A.Bray from Hurstlea ABC. The aggressive Bray started coming forward from the opening bell, but it was good to see Jamie get straight into his stride with long accurate punches of his own. Jamie’s boxing got him in front through rounds 1 and 2 as Bray hustled and bustled but landed few clean shots. The last round saw the home boxer pull further ahead as he started scoring with long right hands as Bray tried to push the pace. Jamie was as overjoyed as the fans to receive the unanimous decision and was good value for his win.

The final CABC boxer in action was club captain Dom McGurl. Dom always attracts a large following on home shows and he didn’t let them down with his performance. Facing M.Chalkley from Rayleigh, Dom started in sharp fashion as he looked to land heavy shots from word go. Chalkley pushed forward at every opportunity and tried to use his weight advantage to deny Dom room. The first finished with the home man in front thanks to his cleaner work. The second followed a similar pattern and there was some powerful exchanges mid ring in which Dom landed the better blows. One particular right hand caught Chalkley flush and he showed good resilience to come through. The pace told in the last as both men slowed. Dom was able to better utilise his defence as a result of this, and scored on the counter to keep in control. He ran out a worthy points winner in what proved to be a successful night at the Lexden Golf Club.

Trophies were presented on the evening by ex club member and current professional prospect Lee Purdy (see pic above).

Thanks go out to all travelling clubs and officials for making the show a success. Thanks too to our event sponsor Inchcape VW of Ipswich Road Colchester.
