As
Colchester ABC travelled the short distance down the A12 for Ipswich ABC annual dinner show, the coaches were optimistic on the nights boxing ahead. Colchester had just one boxer matched for the evening, Dom McGurl.
The venue, Elizabeth Hotel, Copdock, pulled a lively crowd hosting 11 bouts in total. McGurl was bout number 7 of the evening, facing E.Smart of Lowestoft ABC.
The first round saw Smart, the stockier boxer, charging forward trying to close down the range. McGurl, the more experienced boxer, tried to push Smart back to feel his opponent out with the jab.
The second round started much like the first, with Smart constantly looking to get close and successfully landing some short-range hooks. The aggressive stance of Smart was proving awkward for McGurl to get his range. However, success came as McGurl stepped back and delivered a straight right cross as Smart rushed in. McGurl surged forward with some more heavy handed straight shots forcing Smart onto the back foot. The right cross proved to be McGurl's favoured shot of the evening.
The closely battled third round saw Smart slipping the straight shots to get in close where he wanted to be. Both boxers worked hard in the clinches with hooks and uppercuts to both head and body. The final bell sounded.
The decision went to Smart on a majority verdict.
McGurl will take a lot from this closely fought contest and should look to build on this in the gym before next weeks outing at Harwich ABC on the 5th December.
