Dean was matched against the more experienced George Griffin of the host Centurions ABC in what proved to be a very honest and tough fought affair. The bout started at a rapid pace with Dean keen to open with brisk attacks. George, boxing smartly off the back foot, was able to weather the storm and get into his boxing against his shorter opponent. His tidier work may have edged him the first round.
The second started as the first had finished, with Griffin holding his range whilst the Colchester lad looked to close down the distance. Dean tried to unsettle his opponent with his all action style but was possibly guilty of waiting slightly too long between attacks. He had success with some good body punches but maybe not enough to slow Griffin down.
With nothing to lose Dean stepped up the pace in the last round and went on a more sustained attack. Griffin looked caught between two minds at one stage as to whether to box and run or stand and exchange. this lead to some exiting exchanges as the crowd warmed to both boxers' endeavours. Despite his usual determined effort, Dean was never quite able to establish control over his smart opponent, but the test will prove a valuable one in times to come.
The decision went to Griffin at the end of one of the night's best bouts, but both clubs agreed it was good to get the boys out early season in a good close contest.
