Junior Sam Krarup got his season underway against A.Andrews of Ipswich ABC. Andrews started fast from the bell and it was soon evident his forte was strength and power. Taking some heavy shots as he struggled to bring his boxing skills to bare, Sam was battling throughout the opener to stay in touch. He was rocked by a heavy right hand towards the end of the round which forced the referee to administer a standing count. The bell ended the round before any further action. Coming out for the 2nd round and needing to lift his performance, Sam tried to get his punches going but could not sustain enough speed to keep Andrews at bay. The Ipswich boxer scored heavily again to the head and looked very powerful on the attack. Again the referee stepped in to impose a standing count, by which time the Colchester corner had seen enough and retired Sam at the end of the count. A valiant effort, but not enough on the night, Sam can only learn from the experience and come back better for it. Next in for Colchester was debutant Jamie Cook as he took on fellow first timer Connor Tow of the host Rayleigh club. With the crowd behind him Tow made the more positive start and was soon scoring with heavy shots from both hands.Jamie looked caught in two minds as to defend or attack and soon found himself under more pressure. This resulted in a quick trip to the canvas which the referee ruled a knockdown. Jamie blasted back at the restart before the bell ended an eventful first round. The second saw jamie trying to work behind his jab but he was still getting caught with Tow's heavier punches when a little sloppy with his defence. A much closer round though, and the CABC boxer was back in contention. He still had it all to do in last, and it wasn't lack of trying that prevented him from winning. He fought back gamely and looked the fitter as the Rayleigh lad seemed to be tiring badly. It wasn't quite enough though and the home boxer Tow received the points decision. Last up for the club was senior Shaun Mansell as he took on R Coffey from Chadwell. Coffey started like a train and drove Shaun back into his corner with a ferocious onslaught. The Colchester man boxed his way to safety but the pattern of the first was set. In round 2 Shaun was guilty of trying to play Coffey at his own game as he never gave himself the room to box the distance that would have suited. His fitness prevailed though and the last round saw his faster hands turning the bout around as he picked up points in his best spell of the fight. One judge had him the winner but the other two went with the Chadwell man giving him a majority decision. All 3 should be pleased with their efforts and the season and career debuts will stand them in good stead for their next outings!
