Dean Porter’s exciting season continued at top speed last night with a resounding, thoroughly deserved victory in the Eastern Counties Schools Final. Hosted by Cambridge University on their annual Gown v Town event, Dean’s was one of 3 Schools finals carried over from Saturdays semis. Facing Norfolk Champion Steve Middleton of kingfisher ABC Yarmouth, Dean was in determined mood from the opening bell. He attacked relentlessly throughout round one, and didn’t allow the more experienced Middleton to get in his stride. The Yarmouth boxer was trying to box on the counter and scored with occasional heavy right hand shots as Dean closed down the range. Whilst powerful, these single shots weren’t enough to perturb Dean and he continued to score with two fisted attacks to body and head.
Both boxers settled down slightly in round two but Dean was still always the one initiating each attack. His superior hand-speed and strong combination punching was pulling out a lead as Middleton continued to try to counter. Landing heavy shots to the body as the round closed, Dean was wearing the Norfolk Champ down as the minutes passed.
A determined Middleton started the final round with renewed vigour but the prepared Colchester boxer was able to raise his game more, and continue to stay in front. Dean continued to work right through to the final bell as he constantly scored to head and body with heavy shots from either hand. The judges rewarded his endeavours with the unanimous points verdict and Deans second title in nineteen days. This books him a place in the National ¼ finals on February 8th, where he will return to Essex to box the winner of the London v Home Counties qualifier.
