Dean Porter’s hopes of capturing a place in the National Semi Finals crashed today as he dropped a close majority verdict to London Champion, Northolt’s Khaliq Miah.
In one of the best contests of the day, Dean was always in contention but was just edged out by his opponent’s greater experience. Dean started in his customary fast aggressive style and landed early on with a cracking combination to the head. Miah must have realised then he was in for a tough afternoon as the Colchester lad seemed to be carrying on with his routine of recent weeks. Miah had other ideas however and by the end of the first was back in contention boxing cleverly and pinching points here and there. The second round saw Miah trying to dominate with fast combinations and fleeting footwork. Dean endeavoured to match his pace and was landing the heavier shots, though his successes were more sporadic than he would have liked.
The last round started with everything still to play for both boys, and they both responded by engaging in some blistering exchanges. Dean was continuing to push the action but was clearly starting to tire. He had success with some crunching body shots, but Miah was still scoring on the retreat and doing his best to nullify Dean’s attacks by using his experience and denying him room.
The majority decision went in favour of the London boxer, but Dean’s efforts were admirable and his supporters from the club, along with the neutrals in the crowd, gave him a rousing applause. His exiting run of victories may have come to an end, both he has captured both the Essex and Eastern Counties Schools titles with some style, and a National ¼ final in his first championships is no mean feat. He has done himself proud and everyone at the club is proud of his efforts.
