The CABC season got underway last night with Shaun Mansell boxing on the 13 Air Assault Dinner show at Colchester’s Merville Barracks.
Shaun faced soldier C.Glading representing Ipswich ABC in the fourth bout of an action packed evening. Shaun made an electric, if frantic start, and was soon involved in a slugfest with his shorter opponent. Glading showed determination to get on top of the action and continuously pushed Shaun on to the ropes and unloaded with heavy hooks. Shaun moved and attempted to get his range but Glading wasn’t to be denied and continued to roll forward and deny Shaun space. Pinned on the ropes and under fire, Referee Mick Basi administered a standing count. When the Colchester man failed to raise his gloves by the count of 8 he stopped the contest with only seconds left in the round.
Not the start to the season that the club or Shaun would have hoped for, but we had the satisfaction of being involved in such a worthy cause. The show was staged to raise funds for the Help for Heroes campaign and the Army Benevolent Fund. Here’s hoping they managed to raise plenty of money!
“Star” contest of the night saw Harwich lightweight Marcus Poston against Double ABA Champion Martin Stead. Darlington soldier Stead showed his class through the last two rounds after Marcus managed to keep the first round tight. Although Stead ran out a worthy points winner, Marcus can take many positives from his first bout of the season against the country’s top 60k man.
