Chris had been scheduled to box on both recent Army based shows, only for his contests to fall through the preceeding day. This lack of opportunity to shake off the ring rust could have cost him last night as he lost narrowly on points.
Competing in the Essex Senior Novice Championships, Chris drew the much fancied Tom Gordon from Southend ABC. in the 1/4 Final stage. Gordon, with an impressive tally of 8 wins from 10 outings started sharp and initiated heavy exchanges from the first bell. Chris blasted back and the action persisted without let up throughout the first round. The relentless pace continued in round 2 with neither boxer willing to give up the initiative. Both scored with very heavy shots to body and head and there were exchanges when either could have received a standing count. In the final round Chris had it all to do after starting to fall behind. After a crashing exchange, Gordon retreated with a rapidly swolling right eye. The referee and Doctor examined the swelling and ruled him ok to continue. Unfortunately for Chris there wasn't long left and despite his attempts to capitalise the bout ended with the need for the judges scores.
The decision went to Gordon who showed courage and resilience to overcome Chris' efforts and was a worthy winner. We can't help but wonder if he'd been match sharp the result may have been different and the CABC coaches hope to keep Chris boxing regularly throughout the season to work on fulfilling his potential.
